Dick Pechagan, a Secatogue Indian who owned a teepee and farmed in this region in 1689, is remembered as the founder of Dix Hills. The spelling of the name was altered from "Dick's" to "Dix" over time. Pechagan sold this land to the Town of Huntington in 1700. The Dix Hills-Melville hamlets, long predominantly a rural agricultural community, witnessed a major shift in their landscapes around the turn of the century. Farms were purchased up by housing developments and the population of the region soared in the decades after World War II's end, resulting in a construction boom. Along Route 110, Melville experienced the growth of a big corporate district. Farms, churches, and historic houses that have elegantly endured the test of time are all reminders of the area's former farming population.
The majority of Dix Hills real estate is composed of medium-sized (three or four bedroom) to big (four, five, or more bedroom) single-family houses and modest apartment complexes. The majority of the residential real estate is inhabited by the owners. Many of the homes in the Dix Hills area were constructed between 1940 and 1969 and are older and well-established. Between 1970 and 1999, a number of houses were also constructed.
